“At a certain hour during the preparation certain kinds of spirits will oppose the work, and at another time this opposition will not be present.”
Theatrum Chemicum/Chemical Theatre, V (1660), p. 126.
Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, follows a cyclical pattern in the night sky, as one might expect:

- Spring: Ophiuchus begins to rise in the eastern sky during the late spring months (May).
- Summer: The constellation reaches its highest point in the sky during the summer months (June to August), making it the best time for observation.
- Autumn: As autumn approaches (September to October), Ophiuchus starts to set in the western sky.
- Winter: During the winter months (November to February), Ophiuchus is not visible as it is below the horizon.
Thus, the Serpent Bearer, is most influential in North America during the summer months. Specifically, it can be seen best from June to August. During these months, Ophiuchus is high in the sky and can be observed with the naked eye.
“the demon Ophiuchos instils negligence, impeding our intentions…”
In essence, negligence produces harm, loss, and various forms of distress, thwarting our intent.
“…everywhere he creeps about, within and without, causing oversights, fear, and unpreparedness, and at other times he seeks by harassments and injuries to make us abandon the work.”
